Phoenix Building / Phoenix Hotel - Pittsford

Phoenix Building / Phoenix Hotel - Pittsford

The centerpiece of the village of Pittsford is the Phoenix Building which has overlooked the village crossroads since its construction as a hotel in 1812. Now a bit of history: Before the current imposing ediface was built , there was an earlier frame structure / tavern on this site, as early as 1807, which served the stagecoach trade. After a fire destroyed the frame tavern, the current brick structure was then built on the site. Architecturally, this distingushed building can be classified as old Federal-style; with steeped gables, a gable fanlight, double chimney profile, and an arcade of elliptical-arch recesses over doors and windows on the first floor. By 1816 Pittsford was on the stagecoach line from Canandaigua to Rochesterville and the hotel / tavern served the Erie Canal and turnpike trade. Among the illustrious hotel guests were DeWitt Clinton, Marquis de LaFayette, Daniel Webster, and Cornelius Vanderbilt. The hotel changed ownership a number of times in its long life but always remained a tavern of sorts; it served as a hostelry for about 150 years. In 1927 it became Tyler's Inn. In 1933 it was sold again and remodeled extensively and opened as The Old Heidelbert, a Barvarian Inn. In 1942 the name was changed to the Pittsford Inn. During all of these changes there were also changes to the exterior of the building - a beautiful veranda was removed, entrances changed, chimneys removed and the exterior was painted white. In 1956, a gas station was erected obstructing the north facade ( the lease on the gas station was not renewed and the station was eventually demolished ). Two disastrous fires occurred around 1963 and the building sat empty and unused for over a year. In 1964, the late publisher, Andrew D. Wolfe of Wolfe Publications fame, purchased the building, rehabilitated it for office use and restored many of the exterior features that had been lost, including the small grass lawn facing the villages's Four Corners. Also, the tall chimneys were rebuilt and the white paint on the exterior bricks was carefully removed to restore the original appearance. Andrew Wolfe's efforts helped to launch Historic Pittsford. The Phoenix Building is now owned by Michael J. Newcomb and houses various businesses including Mitchell Pierson Realtors. It is located at 4 South Main Street in Pittsford, NY.
